Google Recognizes Ukraine’s Great IT Potential

Motorola Mobility, maker of Android smartphones and tablets acquired by Google in May 2012, has recently purchased Ukrainian IT company Viewdle that develops face, gesture and object recognition technology. Reportedly, Google paid USD $30-45 million for being able to use the Viewdle technology in its Picasa service and Android devices.

According to Victoria Tigipko, Director of TA Venture, this purchase confirms Ukraine’s great IT potential as well as high competence and talent of Ukrainian software developers.

This news excited the global Android community with more upcoming development opportunities, as the Viewdle technology will most likely be used in Google Glass, one of today’s most progressive augmented reality technologies.

IT Outsourcing Markets Value 2011: Ukraine, Romania, Hungary and Poland

As reported by Financial Times in August 2012, Ukrainian IT outsourcing sector earned over USD $1 billion in 2011 alone and became the leading one in Central and Eastern Europe having left behind Romania with its IT outsourcing exports estimated at USD $586 million, Poland with its USD $451 million and Hungary with its USD $475 million worth IT services export markets.

According to Financial Times, Ukraine boasts the largest IT resources pool in Central and Eastern Europe which accounts for around 25% of the regional IT outsourcing market.

Ukrainian IT potential and future of the Ukrainian outsourcing industry will be discussed at this year’s Conference “Ukraine: Will the Sleeping Tiger Awaken” that will take place in Kyiv on November 26-27, 2012. Ciklum’s CEO and Founder Torben Majgaard will participate in the panel discussion “Ukraine’s Outsourcing IT Boom and what we can learn from it” during which he together with Victoria Tigipko and Karl Robb, CEO of EPAM Systems, will consider realistic strategies for national progress and suggest the pragmatic political actions needed to move the country forward.
