Typical lifespan of an online empire is 11 years. Does Facebook have 3 more years to go?

Easy Success of Online Empires - an Illusion

18th of December 2012 by Vlad Solodovnik, Sales and Marketing Analyst

When was the last time you used AltaVista?  Wait, have you heard of AltaVista at all?  Facebook’s success makes earning billions online look easy, just like Olympic Games athletes make their craft seem effortless: years of training and countless failures usually don’t get the same level of news coverage as few seconds of fame.  So, is the price of online success lower than in the “real world”?

The beautifully designed infographic below puts histories of online empires in perspective: many once-mighty giants’ valuations have fallen to make way for faster, nimbler competitors eager to offer customers ever-improving online product.  Valuations are subjective, but reality is objective: five large and once-successful companies failed within 11 years after founding.  Will Facebook beat the odds and stay in our daily vocabulary three years from now?
